Creativity, Craft, Community
These three words are our core values. We know that words can be cheap, but at Stroom our values mean something. From our packaging choices to our collaborations, we strive to make Stroom a brand that does good.
One of the most important ways we embrace creativity is in our collaborations with artists. For every beer we make, we collaborate with a Belgian artist to feature their work on our cans. We never commission work for a can – we find existing works that inspire us, without influence or direction from the brewery. For beers we keep making, we pay the artists for every can we sell. The amounts are small, but our ambition is big! We do what we can to support the cultural sector.
Keeping things interesting
We would get bored if we only brewed one or two of the same beers over and over again, but we also know that people have their favorites and like having something reliable that they can always come back to. We’ve tried to strike a balance by keeping a core range of 6 always available beers alongside a lineup of seasonals, one-offs, and collabs to make sure our menu is always changing.
One of our favorite annual traditions is our fresh hop beer brewed with hops grown right in the neighborhood. Every year our neighborhood hop farmers bring in their backyard crops and help us pick the hop flowers from their plants and the ones we’ve grown to brew a fresh hop ale.
Beyond the beer, we also have rotating art exhibits and other creative collaborations inside and outside the brewery all year long.
Doing the right thing
At our brewery, we’re renewable powered. Our brewhouse is 100% electric and we buy our electricity from a 100% renewable powered operator. Even when we brew elsewhere, we look for sustainable operators and find ways to minimize our impact. This isn’t the cheapest or the easiest way to brew, but this is one way we can be better members of the community.
We also chose aluminum cans to hold our beer. That is because we are big believers in the ecological advantages of aluminum: ultra light weight, recyclable with very low energy, infinitely recyclable, low space consumption…not to mention, aluminum cans are impermeable to air and light – the two key enemies of good beer!
